Atomically-resolved edge states on free-standing graphene stripes at room temperature

In this seminar I would like to present some of the interesting physical properties of edges in graphene. In particular, I will show the appearance of strong metallic edge states at room temperature in the free-standing edge of graphene stripes grown onto a Pt(111) staircase substrate. These metallic edge states depend mainly on the edge geometry, but also on the size and shape of the graphene sheet. Using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and a theoretical study with tight-binding and ab-initio calculations we demonstrate the sublattice localization of the edge states, suggesting a non-zero spin polarization. Our results open new prospects in the study of spin phenomena at the edges.
