April 15, 2016 - The paper entitled A tight-binding model for MoS2 monolayers by Emilia Ridolfi, Caio Lewenkopf, and collaborators from the University of Central Florida (USA) has been chosen as one of the Highlights of 2015 amongst all papers published in the IOP journals during that year. October 26, 2015 - Andre Ricardo Carvalho, student of Caio Lewenkopf got his PhD Degree for his thesis “Edge magnetization in chiral graphene nanoribbons and quantum anomalous Hall effect in graphene”. December 11, 2014 - Roberto Bechara Muniz has been awarded the Excellence in Science prize by Universidade Federal Fluminense. July 31, 2013 - Carlos Leon, student of Andrea Latgé got his Master's Degree for his work “Modulando o gap de energia de nanofitas zigzag de grafeno”. The examination committee was formed by Andrea Latgé, Pedro Venezuela, and Mario Sergio de Carvalho Mazzoni (UFMG). We are happy that Carlos will continue in our group as a PhD student. July 10, 2013 - Andrea Latgé was appointed to be the Program Coordinator of the XXXVII National Meeting on Condensed Matter Physics (Encontro Nacional de Física da Matéria Condensada - ENFMC), sponsored by the Brazilian Physical Society. We congratulate Andrea and wish her success in this important activity for the Brazilian condensed matter community.

July 1st, 2013 - Antonio Costa is the new Condensed Matter Seminar coordinator. He replaces Caio Lewenkopf, who organized the seminar from 2010/2 till 2013/1. Let's support Antonio by suggesting speakers, by increasing the seminar attendance rate, and by actively participating in the seminar discussions!

June 1st, 2013 - Mariana Odashima is the most recent member of our group. Mariana was awarded with the very competitive FAPERJ fellowship “Pós-Doutorado Nota 10”, that contemplated 20 fellowships in all areas of research. Mariana got her PhD in 2010 working under the supervision of Klaus Capelle at USP-São Carlos. She then joined the group of Hardy Gross at the Max-Planck in Halle (Germany). Mariana's main background is electronic-structure theory, in particular, density-functional theory (DFT), working in the interface of Quantum Chemistry, Atomic and Molecular Physics and Solid-state Physics. We welcome Mariana and wish her a fruitful stay at the IF/UFF.

May 18, 2013 - André Ricardo Carvalho, second year PhD student of our group, won the Best Poster Prize of the Section “Graphene, graphene related materials, transport in nanostructures, and molecular dynamics” at the “Encontro Nacional de Física da Matéria Condensada” for his work “Edge magnetization in chiral graphene nanoribbons”. Congratulations!

April 25, 2013 - Our proposal “Transporte de carga e spin em sistemas nanoestruturados” has been awared with a grant at the FAPERJ “Projeto Temático” competition. The main goal of this two-years project is to foster state-of-the-art common research projects involving the PIs of the Nanoscopic Systems Group and the groups lead by Tatiana Rappoport and Aléxis Hernández at UFRJ, and Tobias Micklitz at CBPF. March 22, 2013 - With the goal of contributing to foster the experimental research at our departmant, Roberto Bechara coordinated a proposal to acquire and comission a laser ablation system at IF/UFF, with a budget of around R$1.200.000,00. His project was one of the 13 proposals (all areas included) that won the FAPERJ competition this year. Click here for more details.
